In cooking, a casserole (from the French
for 'stew pan') is a dish consisting of tough cuts of meat, poultry or game
stewed in liquid with vegetables
and
flavorings. Vegetarian versions also exist. The pot to be used, called a
casserole dish or just casserole, has a tight-fitting lid, and is placed in
an oven or on the hob. In cooking, a

cooking'. Hot dish is a Midwestern
(and particularly Minnesotan) term for a casserole-like main course; it is
one of the quintessential foods of that region.
One of the most popular casseroles –
especially at church potlucks and family gatherings – is green bean
casserole, whose main ingredients are green beans, cream of mushroom soup
and French fried onions. |
